| My name is Amanda Ortiz and my intern site is the Divorce Recovery Program. This program is offered through the Family Counseling Agency and provides a wide variety of classes and support groups to people throughout Tucson. One class offered is the parent education class, which is a court-mandated class. In Arizona if two people are filing for a divorce, or are trying to obtain custody of their children, they must first complete a one-day parenting class, which is offered by the program. Also offered through the Divorce Recovery Program are support groups for couples and their children who are experiencing a divorce. Other support groups are aimed at individuals who are in certain stages of divorce. In divorce group II the individual is trying to cope with the changes of divorce and learning to say goodbye. In divorce group III the individual is moving on and learning how to adjust to the changes. The Divorce Recovery Program and the Family Counseling Agency serve a wide variety of people ranging from teenagers to the elderly. Aside from the Divorce Recovery Program the Family Counseling Agency offers assistance to homeless and runaway teens, as well as a companion program for the elderly, and finally, counseling sessions for families.
My responsibilities at the agency at the beginning were to attend training once a week for 2 ½ hours for a little over a month. Once training was completed, I was paired with co-leaders and assigned an age group. Currently, I am working with 10-12 year olds once a week for ten weeks. During the groups, I work with the other co-leaders and develop a curriculum for working with the children and teaching the process of divorce and dealing with the change. Not only do I run a children's group, but also I am responsible for working in the office once a week for four hours. In the office I file, register individuals for parenting classes, answer phones, enter data, and other assigned projects. The purpose of working in the office is to understand how a non-profit agency works and to allow interns networking opportunities. |
