I am currently interning at Tucson Child & Family Resources. As an intern, I divide my time between two different programs and directors, both representing infants and/or toddlers. The first one is for The Arizona Infant/Toddler Institute. This is an educational program provided throughout the state in order to improve the skills of caregivers of young children. I assist in the planning and scheduling of these workshops and also try to help this new program get publicized. This is only the second year of the program, so I find it interesting to be involved in something so new and exciting.
The second program that I work with is the Educational Intervention for Preschoolers program. This program offers services to young children who may have a developmental delay or disorder. The program's goal is to reach these children while they are young and improve their skills before they reach the elementary level. Services I perform are evaluations on children who may have these delays, trying to see if the child is in need of other services. I also perform follow up treatment and activities that are designed to improve these specific trouble areas. Another project that I am involved in is an educational program through KUAT TV. This is a brand new program that to educate childcare providers who may not have time to attend the required workshops. This includes typing assignments, communicating with participating members, and documenting personal progress that each person makes.
I decided to do this internship after identifying my personal love for children. I saw that I needed and wanted experiences in this area and knew that it was something that would better my chances of finding a full-time position once I graduate. After graduation I would love to work for some type of children's educational center or an adoption agency. I have an open mind towards my future career so that I can be exposed to as much as possible. Since starting this internship I have learned many organizational skills. I have learned and experienced the hands on time with children and the paper work that is behind many of these educational programs.
I would advise any person who has this opportunity to take full advantage of it. This is an opportunity to expose yourself to a potential career you might want in the future. You will learn if this is the field of work you want to do or not. It is also a chance to add experience to your resume. All of these things will benefit you while earning college credit. By participating in an internship you will meet many people who might some day assist you in finding a position.
I have already learned that these are positions I would like to have someday. I am now performing follow-up visits with children through The Educational Intervention for Preschoolers. I visit with a language-delayed 4-year-old every Monday and she has taught me more than anyone else has. She keeps me smiling and understanding how kids think and what works and what doesn't, I look forward to having many more of these experiences over the next year with Tucson Child and Family Resources. |
