| My name is Kara Betts and I am doing an internship with Child & Family Resources, Inc., a community based, non-profit organization that is devoted "to enhance the quality of life for children and their families. The organization provides services such as childcare, family support, and youth services to individuals of all socioeconomic backgrounds who reside in Tucson, Phoenix and their surrounding areas. The organization's success has brought many opportunities to our community and has provided students like myself with a once in a lifetime experience. Because I wanted to work with small children in an educational setting, I chose to participate in the Breaking the Cycle Violence Prevention program. This particular program is a three-year delinquency prevention collaborative program that focuses on children ages 0-6 who have been exposed to or live in high risk areas for domestic violence, or have shown aggressive or violent behavior in pre-school. My duties as an intern are to implement the Second Step: Violence Prevention Curriculum into six different preschools in Tucson and Avra Valley. This curriculum is designed to teach children pro-social skills and help reduce impulsive and aggressive behavior. At the preschools, I assist and conduct activities such as role-playing, puppetry, reading children's books, games, and other fun classroom activities. This internship has also given me the opportunity to attend a meeting with the Governor's Commission for Family Violence Prevention and Early Intervention Committee in Phoenix. I was also invited to attend a grant cycle meeting to learn about federal and state grant funding. In the office, I assist the program director with parent and teacher training seminars and create packets of childhood information and activities for the preschool teachers. Thus far, this internship has shown me how much effort is put into special programs for our children. I have enjoyed my experiences at Child & Family Resources and am looking forward to having more responsibilities and interactions with the staff and the children I work with. |
