Intern Stories

Brenda Denogean

Agency: Our Family Services

Term: Spring - 2003

I am very happy to be a part of Our Town Family Center where I am doing my internship. Our Town is committed to expanding and strengthening support systems for children and youth in Pima County.

I work with the Family Builders program at this agency. Family Builders receives closed cases from Child Protective Services and we try to provide services to these families. We make unannounced home visits to the families referred to us and ask them if they are interested in our services. Families can accept or deny the offer to our services because it is completely voluntary. Most of the time the families are willing to work with us and accept our offer. When they agree to work with Family Builders, we set up an appointment to meet with the whole family. During the visit we ask the family different questions to get to know the family history, which is called an assessment.

It is very rewarding being a part of this program where I can help those in need. I chose to be a part of the internship program because I was undecided about my plans for after graduation. I also wanted to get the work experience and get a better understanding of what I could do after graduation. Being a part of this internship has helped me realize that I enjoy working with people and I am good at it. I am now really thinking about getting my masters in social work. If you want to get work experience, give back to the community, and earn seven credits towards graduation, I highly recommend being a part of the internship program.
