Spotlighting Positive Youth Development State and Community Teams
Open Application Process

When Youth Are Supported, Everybody Wins: Announcing the second annual call for teams, now open to large population communities as well as states! Spotlighting Positive Youth Development is a unique professional development opportunity for states and communities interested in building new or furthering existing collaborative efforts to promote adolescent health and well-being through positive youth development approaches and the coordination of services for youth across sectors.

The goals of these collaborations are to create environments where young people feel safe, supported, feel connections with adults and institutions where they spend time, and have a valued, meaningful role in developing change in their communities.

Why the Positive Youth Development Strategy? We define positive youth development as caring adults engaged with youth in meaningful activities which foster the development of agency, connectedness and competence.  Youth possess multiple assets and positive youth development is an approach that seeks to develop these assets as a proven way to help youth develop the motivation and skills to make healthy decisions.

What Teams Can Expect:  Fully sponsored travel expenses to the kickoff event in February, a full year of technical assistance, training opportunities (online), networking with other teams, and coaching from the Building Partnerships for Youth team. You’ll experience the additional rewards of engaging in collaborative efforts to support healthy development of youth, meaningfully incorporating youth in the process.

What Will Be Expected of Selected Teams: Be ready to join us February 3-5, 2010 in the Washington DC area for a kickoff session that will prepare you and your team for developing your game plan for how to develop a collaborative or take your existing collaborative to the next level. Then, take what you’ve learned and accomplished during the kickoff back home and keep the momentum going, while your ‘coaches’ from Building Partnerships for Youth provide support, resources, information, and ongoing opportunities to network through emails, conference calls, and webinars throughout the year.
Throughout the year, your team will prepare to share the principles of positive youth development with others throughout your community or state. Share your knowledge, experiences and team accomplishments by hosting and delivering at least one professional development session regarding the elements of positive youth development, and how positive environments for youth can be developed and sustained.

Who Your Teammates Should Include: Recruit a team of community or state-level leaders from a variety of sectors that serve youth: education, health, faith-based, and voluntary youth serving organizations, and at least one experienced youth leader; if possible, include partnership with land-grant University Cooperative Extension.
