This class introduces the concept of creating a water-thrifty landscape that relies on seasonal rainfall and rainwater harvesting techniques rather than supplemental irrigation with potable water. Design tips, plant selection and considerations, and plantings for berms and basins are discussed. Taught by Scott Calhoun.

The City of Tempe offers free Landscape Workshops twice a year (Spring & Fall). We offer these classes to help residents work through and plan and design for their new landscape.

The second workshop covers a large variety of plant materials suitable for our desert climate.

This hands-on class will teach you how to set your sprinkler/irrigation timer and how to take control of your landscaping issues.

Changing Climate and Fire in the West October 29 / 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM MWS, Yavapai
The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension will host two distinguished speakers from the University of Arizona Laboratory of Tree Ring Research on the evening of October 29, 2009. Dr. Malcolm Hughes will present Our Changing Climate and Dr. Tom Swetnam will present Fire in the Changing West. Each presentation will be approximately ½-hour long followed by a period for questions and discussion. Dr. Hughes is a Regents Professor with expertise in what he calls mesoclimatology: which explores how and why climate varies on interannual to century time scales. Dr. Swetnam is a Professor of Dendrochronology and is well known for his extensive research in fire history reconstruction using tree rings. These two scientists are leading experts in the fields of dendroclimatology and dendroecology (the science of using tree rings to explore climate variability and ecological processes). The two presentations are designed to complement each other and promise to be both engaging and intriguing.
